Robert A. Patzner

September 11, 1932 - February 18, 2018

Robert A. Patzner, age 85, of Council Bluffs, passed away Sunday, February 18, 2018, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital.

Bob was born September 11, 1932, in Guttenberg, Iowa, to the late Charles A. and Hilda (Althaus) Patzner. He attended Iowa School for the Deaf class of 1951, where he was standout in basketball, he once played against St. Louis Cardinal pitcher Bob Gibson - and even was involved in an altercation with Gibson on the basketball court. Bob married Rosemarie Sekera on April 18, 1958. They were blessed with five children, Terry, Monica, Trudy, Marty and Tracy. Bob worked 42 years in production for Serta Mattress Company, retiring in 1996. He then worked for Farner-Bocken and FedEx. Bob owned racehorses for many years on his 10 acre hobby farm; umpired and refereed in the Council Bluffs/Omaha area for many years. He was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, in Omaha, Neb.; CB Silent Club and the National Deaf Hall of Fame for basketball.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his brothers, LaVern Patzner, Charles Patzner; and sister, Virginia Patzner Schmitt.

Bob is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rosemarie Patzner, of Council Bluffs; children, Terry (Christine) Patzner, of Omaha, Monica (Thomas) Strub, of Swisher, Iowa, Trudy Patzner, of Council Bluffs, Marty (Tanya) Patzner, of LaVista, Neb., Tracy (Traci) Patzner, of Papillion, Neb.; 9 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; brothers, Delos Patzner, of Boone, Iowa, Duwayne (Grace) Patzner, of Hazel Green, Wis.; nieces and nephews.

Memorial service was held last Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 12 noon at Cutler-O’Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel. A lunch will follow at the Walnut Hill Reception Center, 1350 E. Pierce St. Memorials may be directed to Iowa School for the Deaf Foundation-Robert Patzner Athletic Scholarship Fund.
