Marvin Masters

August 9, 1926—May 18, 2020 

Marvin H. Masters, 93, of Ottumwa, died May 18, 2020 at home. 

He was born August 9, 1926 in Chariton, IA to John William and Ethel Alice Over Masters.

Marvin married Joyce H. Brooks on August 8, 1960 and she preceded him in death on August 22, 2014.

Marvin was a graduate of the Iowa School for the Deaf.  He had worked at Lowenberg Bakery, reupholstered furniture for others, worked at Cantex Brick Plant and at Tenco for a short time. 

He enjoyed bowling, yardwork and attending picnics with others in the deaf community.

Marvin is survived by his daughter, Cheri Richards of Ottumwa; four grandchildren, Jennifer Utterback, Amber Utterback, Jessica Utterback and R.J. Bailey; 7 great-grandchildren, Adrian Jimenez, Julian Jimenez, Sedrick Utterback, Morgan Murphy, Taya Utterback, Bianca Randolph and Meadow Bailey.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Peggy Jo Masters; 4 brothers, Charles, Harry, Ray and John Masters and 3 sisters, Retta Johnston and infants Velma Ruth Masters, Edna Lucile Masters.

Limited visitation will be open to friends from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left for the family at

Private funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Martha McAntire officiating. For those not able to be inside the funeral home with the family during the service, you may watch the funeral from Reece Funeral Home’s Facebook page. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Serving Davis and Wapello Counties.
